BOXED

It took me a while, but I finally compiled, and built from scratch, a super-limited boxed set of my music.
This particular set has already been gifted to Melanie Hoch; who graciously requested that it should come into existence in the first place.
Included in the handmade box: a thirty-five page hand bound book of images and disc notes, individual inkjet prints on aquarelle rag paper, and sixteen audio file discs (who said the CD was dead?)

SECOND SACRIFICE

Another sacrifice to Oneadasius. Too many days have passed since my last post. Rest assured that art is being created, but I've neglected to update the blog and thus disrespected the blog gods.
My humble offering has been made.

Please pardon the fowl mouth...

HANGING IN THE SKY LIKE A MUSHROOM CLOUD

This little picture is now float mounted on a black background in this cool gold frame!
Even though it's a little piece I've hung it high on my living room wall above the Stone Skipper and Division of Labor.

THE 'H' IS SILENT

I'm pleased to announce that the new Reld Oth digital album Acolyte is available on bandcamp! If you would like a hard copy (cd with accompanying handmade case) let me know, and I will get that produced for you. For now, go listen to the noises HERE.

NEW DAWN

Emerging from the shelter for the first time after the bomb.
I might have to do another version of this because I'm not too happy with the way the crater turned out. Or the corrugated rooftop. Those things should just look a bit cleaner...

ON MY MIND

Yesterday I drew this picture of Mel strictly from memory! There are some features that are a bit skewed, but her features are pretty unique and are quite permanently tattooed in my brain.

FINISHED(ISH)

This is lacking only a signature at the moment. The gold floor was a bold move which, fortunately, worked, but I'm sure any additional moves could ruin this piece. It's best to quit while I'm ahead (right?)

AWARENESS INITIATIVE

So I've left everyone, including myself, high and dry. I apologize for temporarily stepping away from the true spirit of Almost Naught. Of course I should be doing at least one piece of art a day to adhere to the A.N. manifesto, but let's face it; life is full of wonderful distractions, and I'm too much of a perfectionist to, say, bleed out a smiley face drawing on a napkin and then be pleased with just that as a submission.
We should be pleased to know the gears in my head have relentlessly been turning and my brain factory has been editing draft after draft of my imminent new piece. I'm very excited for the resolve and I wish everyone to remain in high anticipation of it as well.
Good day and good night,
Justin

THE STONE SKIPPER

This guy almost did not make it to completion. I made a lot of mistakes throughout the production of this piece, but I somehow salvaged it in the end.

GATOR!

I drew this last week on a box of 32"x40" gator board. Gator board is a 3/16" thick mounting surface made of fiberglass with a foam core. Heavy duty.

DELUXE

This is another mix cd case. This one is pretty deluxe and is designed to comfortably house two discs. Hand painted with ink on a handmade watercolor paper.
Listen your ears off, Mel!

STRANGE PAPER

I finally got around to not only making some art, but also using some strange paper that came into my possession months ago. This paper was given to me by my roommate Dave, who saved it from being thrown away by our old manager at work, who relieved a customer of it. Apparently, the customer brought into the store some other rolled up paper item wrapped inside this paper, and they then wished to dispose of the intriguing outer layer. But what is it? The original line work on the paper consisted only of the large circle shape which encompassed the smaller numbered circles, an odd nose-like feature at the top of the large circle, and on each side... ears? The vertical thick and thin red lines were also present along with the red block numbers down the left edge, and the black number stamp in the top right corner. Was this a pattern sheet for a hat maker? or brain zone-chart for a surgeon? Regardless, I took to it with my weapon of choice for this project; a .05mm red micron pen which almost seamlessly expanded this bizarre find into an even stranger world.

Below is some enlarged detail. Here you can se the "nose" feature right between Pg1 and Pg2.

BLOT

This is some more Yupo experimentation. Shortly after swirls of ink were added, I would dab or vigorously rub with a napkin to remove most of the color and leave interesting stains.

ME

I'm still spending a lot of time on music right now, so here's something different.
This is a picture of me by my friend and coworker Ryan Whitcomb. Pretty accurate, I must say.

YUPO

I painted this on Yupo paper. Yupo is a synthetic nonabsorbent paper made of recycled material. This was interesting to experiment with. The ink takes a bit longer to dry and therefore retains a workable quality for much longer than on regular watercolor paper. I shall master this stuff!

LIMITED TIME

My new song Decade is available as a free download. This song is an ode to the style of music making I started with 10 years ago when the original iceax songs were being made. I also incorporated just enough of my current approach to sound in the song. Heavy.

WORKIN' ON IT!

I've been making a lot of music along with visual art in recent days. There haven't been as many daily posts as I would like, but that's simply because I can't efficiently post fragments of songs that are themselves still in pieces. Just hold tight. The rule of 'one a day' is being allowed some mutation seeing as how I'm just generally more motivated lately. 'Art or die' may quickly become my new mantra.
In the mean time, here's something that greatly influences me:

YES! This Bienfang watercolor paper worked really well and has become one of my three favorite surfaces to work on.
This guy here is involving himself in a mysterious ritual. I hope he knows what he's getting himself into!

ACTION!

These are preliminary sketches for what I hope to be a 6" three dimensional figure at some point. The more you talk about these sorts of things, the less likely they are to manifest themselves in reality, so... Photobucket

DIFFERENT STROKES...

Not quite sure how I feel about this one. This was made on a third type of paper than those I have been using quite exclusively. The ink is super absorbed by this paper and has presented me with a new challenge to manipulate the ink. The ink also loses a lot of its vibrancy once dry. The final result is different, but I don't hate it... Although I do dislike those lines above the head.

FOLLOW UP/DOWN

Here is the follow up (still unfinished) to the perpetually wrong picture i started a few days ago.
I really like how crisp all of the line work is except for the blue guy down there. He officially blew (blue?) it for me.
