This is detail of my latest paint Signs of Life.
A fat log with moss growing on it is abandoned near a can which was used for heating some food. A stick is propped against the log with an old bag hanging from it. Someone at sometime used this area as a temporary outpost. See justincipa.com for the full painting.

HAM RADIO
see full painting at justincipa.com
Ham Radio. Full title: Mom Does Ham Radio Now That Dad is Gone.
A really odd (no surprise) inspiration is behind this title:
There's a man who lives a few doors down from me. This guy has a leaf blower and every Sunday in late summer/ autumn he is outside his property obsessively blowing leaves from here to there for hours at a time. I've observed him blowing them from the sidewalk to the street, and from street side blowing them out from underneath neighbor's cars... back onto the sidewalk? He's probably in his late fifties and he's sweating from this. The blower is constantly running so when he walks in a direction to blow leaves one way, and then turns to walk back, he's now kind of blowing stuff back in the direction from whence he came. It's maddening to watch and he is meticulous with this chore. I'm sure he feels like he's doing the neighborhood a favor, because I have seen him blowing the leaves off parked car's hoods and windshields.
One day he was using the blower from about 4 in the afternoon until about 9:30 PM. I watched him and I got closer and closer to him. In his frantic scurrying, he did not even notice me in his peripheral. I eventually gestured and he looked up, saw me, and turned the blower off. I said, "Hello... What are you doing?"
He said, "I'm cleaning off the sidewalk."
I said, "Okay, but it's 9:30 on a Sunday night. Maybe if you have a rake and a broom? You know what I'm saying?"
He said, "I'm almost done."
I said thanks and began to walk away.
He then asked, "You live around here?"
I turned and said, "Yes."
He asked, "Where about?"
I said, "Close enough." and the blower immediately turned back on so he could finish the task.
Even though I was irritated by all of this I started to fabricate a reason for his insanity. I imagined the guy lives alone and his partner tragically died years ago. This guy copes with the loss through obsessive cleaning. He must interact with every last flake of leaf and every last particle of dust, all of which blow around into finer and finer clouds of debris on those fateful Sunday nights.
Ham radio is a hobby involving people from all walks of life. The term "ham" is derived from the terms hobby and amateur. Many ham radio operators build their own equipment and broadcast from their own homes. It's a hobby for those who want to reach out to the world and make a connection with others. I could imagine this hobby helping someone cope with loss. In the scenario in my painting, a mother is observed after the passing of the father. This hobby is perhaps a little atypical for Mom's personality, but the child observing finds it to be just as intriguing as it may be concerning.

UFO
This scene is titled I Think I Saw A U.F.O.
The scene is akin to the Car Crash painting. I originally wanted to do another car crash scene where the driver's excuse for crashing was that he was distracted by a U.F.O. in the sky. The driver was driving drunk and could be using a U.F.O. as an excuse for the wreck, or perhaps he was so drunk that he believes he did truly see a U.F.O.
This theme has been altered to instead represent a celebration (hence the cake!) which itself is enough out of control that it convinces our subject that he, at some point, saw the U.F.O. and was even potentially abducted. It's all a real blur.

DEAD DOG
A dead dog with her favorite toy.
My sister recently told me she will "...stick to drawing dogs and flowers..." after finding my one Anomoly painting to be disturbing. Well, inspiration comes in all forms and this new painting is of a dead dog. The dog is laid to rest with her stuffed toy and some flowers are placed on her. There are also some daisies growing there.

A MISCALCULATION
This scene depicts a miscalculation. The miscalculation could represent the patient's poor judgement which led him to the hospital (yes, that hospital looks like a terrible place)- or, the miscalculation could have been on part of the doctors that failed to keep him alive; or botched a surgery.
I think that one white rectangular thing is a medical chart of some kind, and the other black rectangle is a two-way mirror. Light on the ceiling. Gas tank at head of table. Oh, and there's another figure peaking through the curtain on the left.

PERVERT
I think I am really going to title this one "Pervert In The Park"
On the right is a lady wearing a large and decorated hat. The pervert is sitting there being gross. I suppose that center line topped with spots is a tree of some sort.
This is another installment in my 'Anomoly' series. They are turning out to be pretty disturbingly funny.

ANOMOLY
Ok, so this is a scene of a car crash; The wheel well and the wheel the easiest forms to make out. The top left quadrant features some bricks that have landed on the hood. The right half bears the first structure struck by the car. There is a hole in the windshield and the driver's head is on the ground.
It's morbid and playful at the same time. I incorporated some other environmental elements around the side walls of the cradled panel to maybe suggest some confusing road signs which may have led to the crash...

PENDULUM
SCALE
I recently realized (finally researched) what the checker board pattern is that I've been secretly fascinated with for the past year.
Photographic scales are, commonly, strips of black and white checkers that are placed against objects in field surveys to provide a sense of scale when the photos are later reviewed. For example, each segment of the strip may represent a centimeter or an inch. They are often used in archeology and forensics!
Every time I see one crop up on a random Google image search or tv program; the juxtaposition of the black and white graphic against the organic subject creates such an intense dynamic.
Last year I even tattooed myself based on an image of artifacts arranged next to a scale. Again, I randomly found the image online and I had no idea what I was seeing at the time. I thought I was looking at an artist's minimalist mixed media art!
Here is my latest piece: Higgins and FW acrylic ink on a cradled board with additional acrylic mediums.
I'm very excited to work with these visual elements a lot more.
